The Legend of Zelda: Resurgence of Wisdom – Removal of Fall Damage

Recently, the development team of “The Legend of Zelda: Resurgence of Wisdom” revealed in an interview with “Fami通” that originally there was fall damage in the game, but before the final version was released, the team decided to remove it.
Co-producer Tomomi Sano and series producer Eiji Aonuma discussed in depth the reasons for this change and shared the original intention of game design in the interview. Tomomi Sano pointed out that Nintendo and the Grezzo team hope that players can experience more trial and error in “Resurgence of Wisdom” without too many restrictions. He said: “The core essence of the game is that players can keep trying.

We hope to create more free space for players without setting restrictions.” Initially, there was indeed fall damage in the game, but when reaching a high place using “echo”, the development team hopes that players can enjoy the sense of accomplishment of achieving the goal without worrying about falling and ending the game. Therefore, fall damage has been removed and players can explore more freely.

In addition, Sano also mentioned that the “The Legend of Zelda” series has always had the problem of not being able to swim in water. In this game, players can try swimming, further enhancing the interactivity and freedom of the game.

Eiji Aonuma also shared his views on the removal of fall damage. He said that the terrain in the “world of nothingness” area in the game is limited. Players need to exert the ability of “echo” and find ways to break through obstacles and reach the goal. If players lose their lives due to falling, it will make the game too harsh. He emphasized: “Making players feel tired is the most terrible thing. Especially under the setting of “Resurgence of Wisdom”, players need to find a breakthrough to continue moving forward.

” Aonuma also mentioned that Nintendo founder Shigeru Miyamoto once said: “Everyone should be able to reach the end of the game.” This sentence has an important influence on the design of “Resurgence of Wisdom”. Aonuma believes that the ultimate goal of the game is to allow all players to successfully complete the adventure and experience the sense of accomplishment and happiness of reaching the end.

Therefore, removing fall damage is to prevent players from giving up the game due to frustration on the way and ensure that they can successfully complete the entire adventure.

In the interview, the developer also mentioned that the design process of “Resurgence of Wisdom” is full of challenges, especially in the design of the protagonist Zelda. Different from traditional action characters, Zelda’s role positioning in this game focuses more on using “echo” to change the battle situation rather than relying on action battles. Such a design makes the game both challenging and able to maintain the player’s sense of participation.
