According to the latest reports, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may become the first iPhones to feature variable aperture cameras. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the main rear cameras of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be equipped with variable aperture technology. The main camera, a 48MP Fusion camera, was previously referred to as the primary or wide-angle camera in older iPhone models.
Unlike the fixed f/1.78 aperture of the iPhone 16 Pro, the new models will allow for manual aperture adjustment, enabling users to control light intake and adjust depth of field as well as background blur effects. Additionally, Kuo has disclosed that BE Semiconductor Industries from the Netherlands will provide the aperture blade assembly for the iPhone 18 Pro. Although rumors of variable apertures were present in the planning for the iPhone 17 Pro, it appears they did not come to fruition in time. For photography enthusiasts and professional users, the introduction of this technology will undoubtedly further enhance the iPhone’s position as a mainstream photographic device.
